In the last week, I’ve been talking about preparing for disaster–specifically hurricanes. One thing you should be prepared for is the possibility of needing to take paperwork if you need to evacuate, especially in the event your home suffers extreme damage.
The first thing I would advise you to do is put your Social Security cards and passports in a safe place so that you can easily access them if you need them–and if you need to evacuate with them.
What I Did
I placed our three Social Security cards and passports in separate page protectors. Then I placed the protectors in a three-ring binder in our waterproof, fire-resistant safe. (By the way, just in case you’re wondering, we have this safe and are happy with it. It is difficult for me to move, though.)
Locate your Social Security cards and passports. Put them in a safe place such as a safe or even a safe deposit box. If you put them in a safe deposit box, make sure someone else can access that safe deposit box in the event you pass away or become incapacitated. Otherwise, depending on your state’s laws, someone may need to file a legal case to gain access to your safe deposit box and the records contained in it.
Note: If you carry your Social Security card, I urge you to stop–today! If you lose your wallet or if it is stolen, your identity can be more easily stolen if your Social Security card is with it.
How Did You Do?
Did you put your Social Security cards and passports in a safe place? Do you have them in a safe or a safe deposit box of somewhere else entirely? Let me hear from you in the comments!
